100 years of scarves, accessories, and more

echo design

In 2015, Echo brought back the original 1923 logo script and made it the centerpiece of our new identity. In addition to celebrating our 95-year heritage, the new identity introduced “Dot” — the zebra who changed her stripes. With a nod to Echo’s tradition of print and pattern as well as our “never take yourself too seriously" attitude, Dot and the new logo were designed to take Echo forward into its second century and beyond. In 2007, Echo introduced our first beach collection, featuring cover-ups and beach bags. Three years later, swimwear was added at the request of customers and retailers alike.

Steven and Meg Roberts, son and daughter-in-law of Dorothy, published the first of three interior design books, ‘A Home for All Seasons’ in 1998. Long scarfs called Lankies were tied around the waist or draped around the neck. And Echo was there every step of the way, bringing our unique perspective to popular geometrics, florals and paisleys in eye-catching psychedelic colors. Throughout the decade, the pioneering Echo became one of the earliest scarf companies to import fabrics from abroad. We’re proud to say that after 100 years, our love affair with beautiful print, pattern, and color is still going strong. Introducing two new collectible Echo100 scarf collaborations with Lauren Ridloff and Mary-Louise Parker, two actors who transformed their mother's art into stunning scarves.

What A Racket Silk Bandana

The Echo brand began our long, iconic journey after Theresa Hyman requested the logo be printed on every scarf design. This was to distinguish Echo products from the competition and assure everyone — from production to purchase — that each scarf was created with the utmost quality and care. Cargo containers, thoughtfully recycled and placed into residential and commercial projects, create a hybrid building system that saves time and money. Back in the ‘30s, Theresa requested that their logo be printed on every scarf to not only separate the brand from its competition but to also show that each product is created with the highest quality and care. 1923” text on the bottom reflects Echo’s longtime headquarters in NYC. There have been about 20 variations of the logo so far—from a big print to a small one, to a combination of both.

Throughout the decades, the company has survived the Great Depression, World War II, and several economic hardships. In Dot’s office, there’s a needlepoint pillow on the couch that reads “ECHO” in capital print letters. “When we moved into this office, my friend Sue Robins made that for me. Today, the Echo logo is written in a cursive font, under an illustration of a zebra with polka dots instead of traditional stripes. It’s a nod to their “never take yourself too seriously” attitude.

Established in 1923 by husband-and-wife team Edgar and Theresa Hyman on the day of their wedding at city hall in New York City, Echo was launched exclusively with scarves. Over the decades, it’s expanded to home, bedding, cold weather accessories, hats and handbags. In addition, Echo has a license with Ralph Lauren for Polo Men’s and Women’s and the Lauren brands, as well as a private-label division that services Coach, Saks Fifth Avenue and the Museum of Modern Art. Echo Design, a fourth-generation American company, is a New York City based industry leader in the design, marketing, and distribution of fashion and home accessories in North America and globally. The company was founded in 1923, on the wedding day of its founders. What began with just a scarf has grown to include multiple brands in multiple categories.

Echo started as a love story between Dot’s parents, Edgar and Theresa Hyman. The two got married at a courthouse on September 27, 1923, the same day that they launched their company. Funny enough, Edgar’s career began with selling veils (yes, the bridal headgear). He worked for two firms that went bankrupt and it eventually led him to create his own.

The 95th anniversary of the Echo Design Group has technically come and gone but the celebrations are still alive and well. Known for their iconic Echo scarves and colorful accessories, the brand recently took a modern spin on its 1970s #InterestingWoman campaign. The idea behind it all is to highlight visionaries and trailblazers who are making an impact on the world today. With the explosion of technology, we launched Echo Touch — the company’s breakthrough touchscreen compatible gloves in a broad range of fashion colors.

Our work is supported by an immensely talented team of subcontractors and collaborators. Roberts, who was managing director, will assume the day-to-day responsibilities of operating the business and oversee sales. He will report to Steven Roberts, who continues as chief executive officer but adds the title of chief product officer, a newly created role, while relinquishing the title of president to his son. Steven will focus on overseeing design, merchandising and product development. Echo also launched a custom design division after creating a commemorative World’s Fair scarf for the Smithsonian Institution. Competition is fierce and standing out in a crowded field is a big challenge.

Building upon core strengths in print, pattern and color, Echo continues to evolve, always focused on respect for the consumer, each other, and on our global trading and manufacturing partners. After nine decades, Echo remains a dynamic and innovative company. We love designing logos, creating brands and building websites, but if our work doesn’t deliver results, it’s truly pointless. So with every project, we start by gaining an understanding of your needs so that we can tailor our creative solutions around your goals and objectives.

Today, every glove in every material, from wool to cashmere to leather, works with the devices we cannot live without. Under the leadership of Dorothy Hyman Roberts, the daughter of the founders who became Echo's President in 1978, the company experienced unprecedented growth over the course of the new decade. From traditional print marketing to cutting edge online solutions, we have the talent, expertise and passion to launch a new endeavor or breathe life into a tired brand.

The rayon ‘Rationing’ scarf even addressed the country’s feelings about sacrificing for the greater good. The promotion of Charlie Roberts to president and chief revenue officer comes just ahead of the company's centennial celebration next year. Just like that, it’s another day in the life of Dot Roberts—carrying on the family legacy and inspiring the future of the design world, one Echo creation at a time.

The name Echo is an acronym of Edgar’s initials, Edgar C. Hyman cO. A partnership was forged with Polo/Ralph Lauren in 1984 and Echo became the sole scarf licensee for all brands. Eventually, the partnership evolved to include cold weather accessories for both men and women.

Your logo and corporate identity are the cornerstones of your brand. We have extensive experience developing highly creative logos and memorable identity systems. On July 27th, the ill-fated ship collided with another vessel near Nantucket and sank, taking with it the entire Echo line. As a true testament to Echo, the manufacturers kept the factories open during what would normally be a summer holiday and reproduced the entire fall collection.
